COML 598: International & Intercultural

Communication

This course broadened my way of thinking about issues in communication within my own culture as well as internationally. I got a chance in this course to look through different lenses of culture, race, gender orientation, disability, and ethnicity through film and readings. Diversity is so important and matters tremendously across every facet of our daily lives. Throughout this course I critically thought about my own roles in society as well as others and how it shapes leadership roles and the way people view the world. The environment we were raised in and currently are in shape our way of thinking. I learned how to adapt and come into situations with a fresh perspective and learn from others who come from a different type of environment.

Every person comes from a different standpoint on how they view the world- as a leader this course showed me how to recognize and bring light to others' views around me. It is important to be cognizant of other's cultures, sexual orientation, race, beliefs, disabilities, etc. in order to lead and make connections effectively. We all are different and it is import to embrace these differences. During this course I got to create a project that I am still working on in my job with Spokane parks and rec. The project focused on making sports more available to children in lower income families in Spokane. I have included a copy of this project and will continue to update its progress to this page.
