ORGL 605: Imagine, Create, Lead
With this course the on-campus excursion showed me the power of perspective, fun and creativity in leadership. We took the time to play, dance laugh and enjoy each others presence. 'Play' is overlooked in leadership as the focus shifts to business goals, and meetings. We forget what it is like to be silly and enjoy one another-it can bring out new ideas, creativity, and camaraderie that is needed in intense work environments. This course also taught me to see and see again. From a leadership perspective it is so important to look at situations from multiple lenses. I will never forget being taught about taking a step up onto ‘the balcony' to look down on the dance floor. As a leader I learned I not only need to focus on what is going on right around me but to also focus on what is happening overall by seeing the bigger picture. In this course we did our own reflection project on the theme seeing and seeing again. Mine was seeing and seeing again from 14,000 feet. It showed my struggles and successes with climbing a mountain from a leadership perspective. Even when we get to the top of the mountain we still have to get back down and that is a new journey all in itself- just like leadership. This course laid the foundation that leadership is a journey of continual reflection, action, play and growth.
